In 2009 there was a big hype around augmented reality applications running on high-end smart phones. Many of these applications display geo-located data and models on top of the camera view of the mobile phone. Every vendor developed his own infrastructure and data model, but similar to the World Wide Web and related technologies the industry requires open standards, data formats, and specifications. This enables the community to create tools and content that can be used in various applications and systems. ARML is one of the efforts in the direction of an open eco-system in augmented reality.
